Tracy Silva-Barbosa: Time Transcending Time

Murray's photographys of abandoned and decaying buildings reveal an etheral stillness while Silva-Barbosa juxtaposes disparate elements in her mixed media paintings to create a delicate narrative vocabulary. Gallery hours are Thursday - Sunday 1 - 4 p.m.

The Historical Society of Rockland County Opens Two Exhibitions: Voices from Rockland: An Early History of the County(on permanent display)and Why Archives Matter (on display through May 9)with a reception on March 21.

The Voices from Rockland: Early History of the County exhibition will relate early history through historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and sites using the Historical Society’s varied collections to tell stories.

For example, a Lenape cooking pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beautiful and rare Rooster Weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents, exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. A pair of Treason House Candlesticks will help us explore the story of Rockland’s “Treason House” where, supposedly, Benedict Arnold met with the spy Major Andre to plot against Washington’s troops. The exhibition will also include Nyack Turnpike mementos including maps, petitions, cut nails, information about Pierson’s factory in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo. The story of Tom, an enslaved man in Rockland County will be relayed with documents and archival records. Through Tunis Smith’s diary the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer’s diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten’s Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family.

Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History Alliance explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from repositories throughout Upstate New York, including photographs, maps. Highlights of the exhibit include Civil War diaries; WWI exemption letters; a 1775 Stony Point Deed; WWII era cards; Woman’s Suffrage handbills; cotton horse thief poster from Clarkstown circa 1890 and an 1877 Ramapo tax ledger.

Tuesdays through Sundays, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday admission includes a tour of the historic 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House on the museum’s property. Every Tuesday, 4-5 pm ages 8-13

Attendance is open and does not require weekly participation. Come whenever you are free. There will be guest artists each week to offer tips and ideas and help guide students through their art projects. Bring your favorite sketch pad and pencils or use materials that will be available at Hopper House. Bring friends and share ideas, meet with other kids who are art fans and get inspired. Please contact Hopper House if you are interested in attending.

Suggested Fee/Donation: $5.00 per session

First session: January 12, 2010, 4-5 pm, Sandy Levine will be the first guest artists and will offer interesting and fun insights about watercolor.

The Voices from Rockland: Early History of the County exhibition will relate early history through historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and sites using the Historical Society’s varied collections to tell stories.

For example, a Lenape cooking pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beautiful and rare Rooster Weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents, exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. A pair of Treason House Candlesticks will help us explore the story of Rockland’s “Treason House” where, supposedly, Benedict Arnold met with the spy Major Andre to plot against Washington’s troops. The exhibition will also include Nyack Turnpike mementos including maps, petitions, cut nails, information about Pierson’s factory in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo. The story of Tom, an enslaved man in Rockland County will be relayed with documents and archival records. Through Tunis Smith’s diary the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer’s diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten’s Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family.

Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History Alliance explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from repositories throughout Upstate New York, including photographs, maps. Three artist explore how the world is flattening and exploding simultaneously, resulting in dynamic, evolving relationships. Christopher Baker’s multi-media work engages the rich collection of social, technological and ideological networks present in the urban landscape. daniel Baltzer’s paintings explore how communication technology, social networking, and subconscious thought play a role in creating and defining human connections. R. Justin Stewart’s installations investigate how we are shaped by our relationships to others and the world around us, keeping us in a constant state of flux.

Attendance is open and does not require weekly participation. Come whenever you are free. There will be guest artists each week to offer tips and ideas and help guide students through their art projects. Bring your favorite sketch pad and pencils or use materials that will be available at Hopper House. Bring friends and share ideas, meet with other kids who are art fans and get inspired. The Historical Society of Rockland County Opens Two Exhibitions: Voices from Rockland: An Early History of the County(on permanent display)and Why Archives Matter (on display through May 9)with a reception on March 21.

The Voices from Rockland: Early History of the County exhibition will relate early history through historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and sites using the Historical Society’s varied collections to tell stories.

For example, a Lenape cooking pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beautiful and rare Rooster Weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents, exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. A pair of Treason House Candlesticks will help us explore the story of Rockland’s “Treason House” where, supposedly, Benedict Arnold met with the spy Major Andre to plot against Washington’s troops. The exhibition will also include Nyack Turnpike mementos including maps, petitions, cut nails, information about Pierson’s factory in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo. The story of Tom, an enslaved man in Rockland County will be relayed with documents and archival records. Through Tunis Smith’s diary the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer’s diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten’s Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family.

Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History Alliance explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from repositories throughout Upstate New York, including photographs, maps. Highlights of the exhibit include Civil War diaries; WWI exemption letters; a 1775 Stony Point Deed; WWII era cards; Woman’s Suffrage handbills; cotton horse thief poster from Clarkstown circa 1890 and an 1877 Ramapo tax ledger.

Three artist explore how the world is flattening and exploding simultaneously, resulting in dynamic, evolving relationships. Christopher Baker’s multi-media work engages the rich collection of social, technological and ideological networks present in the urban landscape. daniel Baltzer’s paintings explore how communication technology, social networking, and subconscious thought play a role in creating and defining human connections. R. Justin Stewart’s installations investigate how we are shaped by our relationships to others and the world around us, keeping us in a constant state of flux.

Rockland artist Lisa Levart will unveil her newest photographic exhibition entitled, Women of Rockland, at the opening reception on Saturday, April 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at The Nyack Center’s “Women’s Celebration Brunch”. The exhibition will remain at The Nyack Center through April 28 and will then travel around the county. Levart, the 2009 recipient of the Individual Artist grant through Arts Council of Rockland, said that the grant enabled her to bring this project to fruition.

Women of Rockland features a series of large photographic fabric banners with images of five Rockland County women from diverse cultures that capture evocative contemporary interpretations of known and little known sacred myths from their individual and international cultures including a Jewish filmmaker, the founder of Mzuzu Academy, the first internationally accredited secondary school in the northern region of Malawi, a Chinese American visual artist, three young college students from the Sufi Mosque in Chestnut Ridge and a French Gypsy singer/songwriter. The photographic images will be accompanied by a written piece commenting on the ancient myth that each woman chose to embody and why that sacred story has meaning in their everyday lives.

“As a community, Rockland County is evolving, and increasingly becoming diverse in the cultures, faiths and languages of its residents. Yet, even within this amazing mosaic, we often know little about the sacred myths and poetic life stories of our neighbors,” said Levart. “When we reach back into the early myths and stories of all cultures, we often have more similarities than differences. By sharing these photographs with the public, I hope to set the stage for increased dialogue and communication within the Rockland community, as well as an appreciation for the basic connectiveness between the different traditions that help shape our world,” continued Levart.

For those who are familiar with Levart from her Goddess on Earth installation that was displayed at Riverspace Arts in Nyack in 2009, you know that this will be a show worth traveling to see, whether in your own home town or around the county.

The Historical Society of Rockland County Opens Two Exhibitions: Voices from Rockland: An Early History of the County(on permanent display)and Why Archives Matter (on display through May 9)with a reception on March 21.

The Voices from Rockland: Early History of the County exhibition will relate early history through historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and sites using the Historical Society’s varied collections to tell stories.

For example, a Lenape cooking pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beautiful and rare Rooster Weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents, exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. A pair of Treason House Candlesticks will help us explore the story of Rockland’s “Treason House” where, supposedly, Benedict Arnold met with the spy Major Andre to plot against Washington’s troops. The exhibition will also include Nyack Turnpike mementos including maps, petitions, cut nails, information about Pierson’s factory in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo. The story of Tom, an enslaved man in Rockland County will be relayed with documents and archival records. Through Tunis Smith’s diary the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer’s diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten’s Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family.

Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History Alliance explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from repositories throughout Upstate New York, including photographs, maps. Highlights of the exhibit include Civil War diaries; WWI exemption letters; a 1775 Stony Point Deed; WWII era cards; Woman’s Suffrage handbills; cotton horse thief poster from Clarkstown circa 1890 and an 1877 Ramapo tax ledger.

Tuesdays through Sundays, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday admission includes a tour of the historic 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House on the museum’s property. Admission to both exhibition: $7; $5 HSRC members; $3 children under 12. Price includes free admission to the 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House on Sundays from 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Rockland artist Lisa Levart will unveil her newest photographic exhibition entitled, Women of Rockland, at the opening reception on Saturday, April 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at The Nyack Center’s “Women’s Celebration Brunch”. The exhibition will remain at The Nyack Center through April 28 and will then travel around the county. Levart, the 2009 recipient of the Individual Artist grant through Arts Council of Rockland, said that the grant enabled her to bring this project to fruition.

Women of Rockland features a series of large photographic fabric banners with images of five Rockland County women from diverse cultures that capture evocative contemporary interpretations of known and little known sacred myths from their individual and international cultures including a Jewish filmmaker, the founder of Mzuzu Academy, the first internationally accredited secondary school in the northern region of Malawi, a Chinese American visual artist, three young college students from the Sufi Mosque in Chestnut Ridge and a French Gypsy singer/songwriter. The photographic images will be accompanied by a written piece commenting on the ancient myth that each woman chose to embody and why that sacred story has meaning in their everyday lives.

“As a community, Rockland County is evolving, and increasingly becoming diverse in the cultures, faiths and languages of its residents. Yet, even within this amazing mosaic, we often know little about the sacred myths and poetic life stories of our neighbors,” said Levart. “When we reach back into the early myths and stories of all cultures, we often have more similarities than differences. By sharing these photographs with the public, I hope to set the stage for increased dialogue and communication within the Rockland community, as well as an appreciation for the basic connectiveness between the different traditions that help shape our world,” continued Levart.

For those who are familiar with Levart from her Goddess on Earth installation that was displayed at Riverspace Arts in Nyack in 2009, you know that this will be a show worth traveling to see, whether in your own home town or around the county.

Three artist explore how the world is flattening and exploding simultaneously, resulting in dynamic, evolving relationships. Christopher Baker’s multi-media work engages the rich collection of social, technological and ideological networks present in the urban landscape. daniel Baltzer’s paintings explore how communication technology, social networking, and subconscious thought play a role in creating and defining human connections. R. Justin Stewart’s installations investigate how we are shaped by our relationships to others and the world around us, keeping us in a constant state of flux.

"The Altered Landscape" a fine arts show and sale of original, multi-media works by regional artists. The show is green-themed and aims to draw attention to the effects of the human presence on our planet. Incorporating a wide range of artistic styles, the works bring to light the unprecedented need for more social awareness and engagement with regard to the environment. The exhibit will present a full spectrum of fine art from pristine scenery to representations of the industrial sites that are tipping the scale of Earth's delicate balance.

The Historical Society of Rockland County Opens Two Exhibitions: Voices from Rockland: An Early History of the County(on permanent display)and Why Archives Matter (on display through May 9)with a reception on March 21.

The Voices from Rockland: Early History of the County exhibition will relate early history through historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and sites using the Historical Society’s varied collections to tell stories.

For example, a Lenape cooking pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beautiful and rare Rooster Weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents, exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. A pair of Treason House Candlesticks will help us explore the story of Rockland’s “Treason House” where, supposedly, Benedict Arnold met with the spy Major Andre to plot against Washington’s troops. The exhibition will also include Nyack Turnpike mementos including maps, petitions, cut nails, information about Pierson’s factory in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo. The story of Tom, an enslaved man in Rockland County will be relayed with documents and archival records. Through Tunis Smith’s diary the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer’s diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten’s Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family.

Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History Alliance explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from repositories throughout Upstate New York, including photographs, maps. Highlights of the exhibit include Civil War diaries; WWI exemption letters; a 1775 Stony Point Deed; WWII era cards; Woman’s Suffrage handbills; cotton horse thief poster from Clarkstown circa 1890 and an 1877 Ramapo tax ledger.

Tuesdays through Sundays, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday admission includes a tour of the historic 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House on the museum’s property. "The Altered Landscape" a fine arts show and sale of original, multi-media works by regional artists. The show is green-themed and aims to draw attention to the effects of the human presence on our planet. Incorporating a wide range of artistic styles, the works bring to light the unprecedented need for more social awareness and engagement with regard to the environment. The exhibit will present a full spectrum of fine art from pristine scenery to representations of the industrial sites that are tipping the scale of Earth's delicate balance.

Rockland artist Lisa Levart will unveil her newest photographic exhibition entitled, Women of Rockland, at the opening reception on Saturday, April 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at The Nyack Center’s “Women’s Celebration Brunch”. The exhibition will remain at The Nyack Center through April 28 and will then travel around the county. Levart, the 2009 recipient of the Individual Artist grant through Arts Council of Rockland, said that the grant enabled her to bring this project to fruition.

Women of Rockland features a series of large photographic fabric banners with images of five Rockland County women from diverse cultures that capture evocative contemporary interpretations of known and little known sacred myths from their individual and international cultures including a Jewish filmmaker, the founder of Mzuzu Academy, the first internationally accredited secondary school in the northern region of Malawi, a Chinese American visual artist, three young college students from the Sufi Mosque in Chestnut Ridge and a French Gypsy singer/songwriter. The photographic images will be accompanied by a written piece commenting on the ancient myth that each woman chose to embody and why that sacred story has meaning in their everyday lives.

“As a community, Rockland County is evolving, and increasingly becoming diverse in the cultures, faiths and languages of its residents. Yet, even within this amazing mosaic, we often know little about the sacred myths and poetic life stories of our neighbors,” said Levart. “When we reach back into the early myths and stories of all cultures, we often have more similarities than differences. By sharing these photographs with the public, I hope to set the stage for increased dialogue and communication within the Rockland community, as well as an appreciation for the basic connectiveness between the different traditions that help shape our world,” continued Levart.

For those who are familiar with Levart from her Goddess on Earth installation that was displayed at Riverspace Arts in Nyack in 2009, you know that this will be a show worth traveling to see, whether in your own home town or around the county.

Christopher Baker’s multi-media work engages the rich collection of social, technological and ideological networks present in the urban landscape. daniel Baltzer’s paintings explore how communication technology, social networking, and subconscious thought play a role in creating and defining human connections. R. Justin Stewart’s installations investigate how we are shaped by our relationships to others and the world around us, keeping us in a constant state of flux.

Rockland artist Lisa Levart will unveil her newest photographic exhibition entitled, Women of Rockland, at the opening reception on Saturday, April 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at The Nyack Center’s “Women’s Celebration Brunch”. The exhibition will remain at The Nyack Center through April 28 and will then travel around the county. Levart, the 2009 recipient of the Individual Artist grant through Arts Council of Rockland, said that the grant enabled her to bring this project to fruition.

Women of Rockland features a series of large photographic fabric banners with images of five Rockland County women from diverse cultures that capture evocative contemporary interpretations of known and little known sacred myths from their individual and international cultures including a Jewish filmmaker, the founder of Mzuzu Academy, the first internationally accredited secondary school in the northern region of Malawi, a Chinese American visual artist, three young college students from the Sufi Mosque in Chestnut Ridge and a French Gypsy singer/songwriter. The photographic images will be accompanied by a written piece commenting on the ancient myth that each woman chose to embody and why that sacred story has meaning in their everyday lives.

“As a community, Rockland County is evolving, and increasingly becoming diverse in the cultures, faiths and languages of its residents. Yet, even within this amazing mosaic, we often know little about the sacred myths and poetic life stories of our neighbors,” said Levart. “When we reach back into the early myths and stories of all cultures, we often have more similarities than differences. Mathhew Murray: Abandoned America
Tracy Silva-Barbosa: Time Transcending Time
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 27, 5-7pm

Murray's photographys of abandoned and decaying buildings reveal an etheral stillness while Silva-Barbosa juxtaposes disparate elements in her mixed media paintings to create a delicate narrative vocabulary. Gallery hours are Thursday - Sunday 1 - 4 p.m.

The Historical Society of Rockland County Opens Two Exhibitions: Voices from Rockland: An Early History of the County(on permanent display)and Why Archives Matter (on display through May 9)with a reception on March 21.

The Voices from Rockland: Early History of the County exhibition will relate early history through historic objects and documents representing the stories of the people, buildings and sites using the Historical Society’s varied collections to tell stories.

For example, a Lenape cooking pot will begin to tell the story of the history around the Leni-Lenape daily life. A beautiful and rare Rooster Weathervane leads us into the history of early Dutch residents, exploring settlement patterns and important landmarks. A pair of Treason House Candlesticks will help us explore the story of Rockland’s “Treason House” where, supposedly, Benedict Arnold met with the spy Major Andre to plot against Washington’s troops. The exhibition will also include Nyack Turnpike mementos including maps, petitions, cut nails, information about Pierson’s factory in Suffern and information on settlements and factories in Ramapo. The story of Tom, an enslaved man in Rockland County will be relayed with documents and archival records. Through Tunis Smith’s diary the exhibition will look at observations from a farmer’s diary in the lower Hudson --ordinary, extraordinary, and vivid details of farming as a way of life and the relationship farmers have to the landscape, weather, crop production and sales. With the help of documents from Elizabeth Van Houten’s Sampler, the exhibition will explore childhood in that period of time and information about her and her family.

Why Archives Matter, a traveling exhibition developed by the Upstate History Alliance explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records using visuals from repositories throughout Upstate New York, including photographs, maps. Highlights of the exhibit include Civil War diaries; WWI exemption letters; a 1775 Stony Point Deed; WWII era cards; Woman’s Suffrage handbills; cotton horse thief poster from Clarkstown circa 1890 and an 1877 Ramapo tax ledger.

Tuesdays through Sundays, 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Sunday admission includes a tour of the historic 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House on the museum’s property. Admission to both exhibition: $7; $5 HSRC members; $3 children under 12. Price includes free admission to the 1832 Jacob Blauvelt House on Sundays from 12:00-4:00 p.m.

"The Altered Landscape" a fine arts show and sale of original, multi-media works by regional artists. The show is green-themed and aims to draw attention to the effects of the human presence on our planet. Incorporating a wide range of artistic styles, the works bring to light the unprecedented need for more social awareness and engagement with regard to the environment. The exhibit will present a full spectrum of fine art from pristine scenery to representations of the industrial sites that are tipping the scale of Earth's delicate balance.

Complification is an exhibition that investigates the complex world of networks and interconnectivity. Three artist explore how the world is flattening and exploding simultaneously, resulting in dynamic, evolving relationships. Christopher Baker’s multi-media work engages the rich collection of social, technological and ideological networks present in the urban landscape. daniel Baltzer’s paintings explore how communication technology, social networking, and subconscious thought play a role in creating and defining human connections. R. Justin Stewart’s installations investigate how we are shaped by our relationships to others and the world around us, keeping us in a constant state of flux.

Opening Reception: Friday, April 9, 2010 from 6-9PM
