Ceramics
I am now retired from teaching ceramics and am happy to say I have influenced many promising ceramists of all ages. Today, I work privately in my own studio creating what I feel is my own personal style. Using techniques with terresigellata (clay slip), burnishing (rubbing the clay surface to a polished finish) and firing my work in several different types of kilns has helped me develop my work. My full-bodied vessels and sculptures are wheel thrown and hand built. The forms and surfaces are intended to recall a primitive era while still retaining a contemporary character.

Woven Tapestry
Tapestry is a medium that allows me to create an image with a depth of color and texture I feel I can achieve no other way. I find the dichotomy of the ancient medium of tapestry expressing contemporary subjects a powerful and satisfying tool. My primary subject is the human face and female form. My work has won awards and exhibited nationally and internationally in solo, juried and invited shows. I have studied Tapestry weaving at West Dean College in England and I continue my study of this complex medium here in the US where I teach and lecture.

Seeing Ella perform "A Tisket, A Tasket" in an old Abbot and Costello movie is what inspired vocalist Shirley Crabbe to want to sing jazz. "I was born with a passion for singing and when I heard Ella, I knew that jazz singing was 'it' for me." Placing 3rd in the American Traditions Competition (a part of the Savannah International Music Festival, Savannah, Georgia) has helped to make this an exciting year for Shirley. She has also performed at some of New York's finest Cabaret and Jazz Clubs, most recently appearing in two showcases at the world famous NYC jazz club "Birdland". In concert, she has opened for Abby Lincoln, performed with Marion Meadows, Bob Baldwin and has been honored to have the formidable Harold Mabern and Jamil Nasser be members of her back-up band. Performances at Madison Square Garden, the Paramount Theater and in various NYC area Jazz Series' also complement this singer's career. Other credits include the rold of Armelia/Charlain in "Ain't Misbehavin'" at the Elmwood Playhouse and featured soloist on the CD recording "Africa" by the Mystic Pilgrims.

For the last thirty years I have concentrated on the African Diaspora documenting Jamaica, Martinique, St. John, Trinidad, Senegal, Mali, Ghana, Toto and Benin, W. Africa. Documenting the Black Motorcycle Series has taken me to Rochester, Buffalo, Ohio, Michigan and South Carolina. Working with writer Adolph Dupree we produced a multimedia exhibition series on Black Motorcyclists in America. In 1999 I started photographing Wayne Bartow, an African American shipwright and his journey building the Freedom Schooner Amistad. The Amistad journey has taken me to Mystic Seaport and to cities along the east coast of America and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Photographing New Orleans (on a Soros Grant) for Kamoinge Inc., (an African photography collective), I documented the remnants of Hurricane Katrina. I exhibit my work and give PowerPoint presentations. Through my lens I have photographed the homeless, portraits, dance and musicians in a journalistic style and am condensing my lifetime of photography into a personal narrative.

My work is an expression of the impulse, movement and gestures that I find within living forms. The thrust of a leaf from its stems or the weight and direction of a rock, when experienced, bring a feeling, an awareness of life itself – sometimes strong, at times subtle and often masked by the proportioned structure of the form. I am looking for the relationship that exists between life and structure.

Photographing nature. Seeing its grace, honesty, spirit and purity. Opening the viewer’s eyes to look beyond the obvious and instead look at the innate beauty of each living thing. That is what I strive to do with my work. My hope is that my photography will touch the viewer’s heart, and instill in them the need to reach out on their own to protect and care for these creatures and our planet. We have but one life to live, let us live it fully in love and respect for all living things.
