SoYeon Yang

“As part of the series of Postpartum Project, which has been the subject of my work for the past few years, my work delves into the mundane beauty of everyday life as a mother/caregiver. I photograph my children’s toys and their surroundings in their messy rooms and cut out the photographs in shapes of petals/tear drops for a collage, which then becomes vibrant images such as flowers, fruits, insects, etc. symbolizing and celebrating the beauty of motherhood. It is an act of finding joy in the mundane life and also exploring for a healing process of daily challenges as a parent. It is a practice of survival as a mother whose life has been taken control by immense stress, guilt, anxiety and tremendous devotion and love toward my children.”

SoYeon Yang was born in Seoul, South Korea, raised in Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, and is now based in Rockland County, NY. She explores themes of beauty of motherhood, postpartum syndrome and its psychological effects through drawings and collages by using mundane images with photographs of her daily life.

Yang received her BFA in Painting from Hong Ik University, Seoul, South Korea, two MFAs in Fine Arts Studio Painting from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York, and in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

After completing her last MFA degree, Yang worked as a lead textile designer for women’s apparel at Juven’s Inc. in New York City until 2015. She has exhibited in group shows in West Nyack, NY, New City, NY, Hawthorne, NY, Jackson, WY, Bloomfield Hills, MI, Pontiac, MI, Chicago, IL, Rochester, NY, and Haderi, South Korea.
