PROJECT: Creating Cards, Letters, and Crafts for Meals on Wheels Seniors

We will be creating handmade cards, letters, poems, drawings and crafts for Meals on Wheels of Rockland County senior clients.  These handmade items will be distributed by Meals on Wheels drivers when they deliver meals.  It is our goal to cheer-up senior citizens with a handmade card or craft sharing a message of love and good wishes.   Many of these seniors are homebound, isolated, lonely and in need of engagement.  A simple card or drawing can make a senior smile and remind them that they are not alone, that someone is thinking of them.

(Garnerville, NY, May 27, 2020) The Arts Council of Rockland (ACOR) and the Rockland Community Foundation announced today the recipients for the 2020 ARTIST’S SUPPORT FUND, a new initiative that provides grants directly to practicing artists in need of funds to support their on-going work.  The recipients include local artists Bill Baston, Shirley Crabbe, Adam Falcon, Samuel Harps and Conor MacFinn.

“On behalf of the Arts Council of Rockland, I am thrilled to announce this year’s first round of recipients of the Artist’s Support Fund,” said Cheryl Baun, Executive Director.

“This fund was established as a way to support artists’ ongoing practice.  We realize that sometimes even just a small infusion of monetary support can be the one thing that can bring work from concept to execution.  These funds will help to support our local artists whose invaluable works enhance our lives and our communities.”

Conor MacFinn is a Nyack-based animator, filmmaker, and performer of Americana music. Conor’s music has been particularly influenced by his heritage from Appalachia, Scotland and Ireland.

Under the ARTIST’S SUPPORT FUND, grants are dispersed twice a year, (August 1st and January 1st) through a review process.  Individual artists are invited to apply if they are Rockland County residents and members of ACOR with an ongoing practice in any discipline, including music, dance, visual art, film/media, creative writing, poetry, theater/performance.

The fund supports artists in a variety of areas, including studio rental or workshop space, supplies, equipment or instrument purchase or rental, fees for professional development workshops, website development and associated fees, transportation costs, costumes, emergencies related to artistic practice, and other needs determined by artists.  Selected artists are eligible to reapply after two years. Deadlines for applications are May 1st and November 1st.

Announcing the launch of our Artist's Support Fund!

Artist Support Fund_Sq Format for Webpage.png

Dear Friends and Supporters:

I hope you are all adjusting, as well as can be expected, to our new normal.

At the Arts Council of Rockland, we seek to be a source of support for the arts community.  We are hearing anecdotally from artists whose work has come to a halt and are without any income.  We also know many are at home with extra time on their hands and have the time to focus on their art.

Now feels like the right time to launch a project we’ve been working on – the creation of our Artist’s Support Fund.  This small fund was established as a way to provide funds to support artists’ ongoing practice.  We know that sometimes even just a small infusion of funds (to purchase a piece of equipment, a special tool, or certain supplies), could be the thing that can bring work from concept to execution.

The arts always have the power to comfort, bring people together, provoke questions, provide answers, make us laugh, make us cry.  NOW MORE THAN EVER, we need the arts.  Once we found ourselves amidst this pandemic, immediately, our social media feeds were flooded with artists offering their gifts to strangers as a way to connect and to bring joy to, or at least a diversion from, this new reality in which we find ourselves.   For some, the arts are a lifeline.  At the Arts Council of Rockland, we are committed to ensuring that the arts endure in Rockland, ALWAYS.

We find ourselves in unusual circumstances.  Many are looking for ways to be helpful and productive.  If you find yourself in a position to help, I am asking you to consider supporting the Artist’s Support Fund.  Simply put, the more money we raise, the more support we can provide.

If you are an artist who could benefit from a small bump to help bring an idea to fruition, review the Artist’s Support Fund guidelines and see if you are eligible.  Deadline for submission is May 1.  Awards are expected to be made around July 1.

Whether you are creating and sharing, supporting with a donation, or just lending support to your neighbors, thank you for being a part of our community.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Baun
Executive Director

**Updated: April 17, 2020

Americans for the Arts is pleased to offer new information and valuable resources related to the coronavirus and our arts industry. As you know, the coronavirus has had a devastating impact on America's arts sector: our research demonstrates that nonprofit arts organizations alone have already suffered financial losses of $4.5 billion in lost revenue and unexpected expenses. In addition, canceled and postponed events have caused the loss of an estimated 197 million in attendance and resulted in an estimated loss of $6.2 billion in event-related consumer spending so far.

Below are a few important resources that will help you today:

ArtsU webinars related to COVID-19: Find free on-demand and live ArtsU webinars that focus on different aspects of COVID-19.

National Arts Action Digital Summit: Registration is open for the first-ever National Arts Action Digital Summit taking place April 27–May 1. There is a free session that focuses on COVID-19.

Coronavirus Resource and Response Center: On this web tool you'll find news, information on relief funds and financial assistance, preparation advice, and two important surveys:

Survey for Organizations (nonprofit, for-profit, and government): This tool tracks and helps measure the economic impact of the pandemic on the arts industry.

Survey for Individuals (artists, creative workers, educators, and entrepreneurs): This survey was created by Americans for the Arts for Artist Relief and captures the financial impact of the pandemic on creative workers.

We encourage you to share the links to these surveys with all of the arts organizations and artists in your community. You can do that by simply forwarding this message. Lastly, because the impacts are worsening daily, please return to the survey link and fill it out again every few weeks, so that we have the most current information possible. ACOR Annual Gala to be held on May 7, 2020

(Garnerville, NY, March 5, 2020) - The Board of Directors of the Arts Council of Rockland (ACOR) announced today the honorees for the 2020 Arts Awards to be presented at ACOR’s Annual Gala on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at the Pearl River Hilton in Pearl River, New York. This year’s honorees include the award-winning jazz vocalist Shirley Crabbe, Philip Hagemann, Conductor of the Rockland County Choral Society, and the Hilton Pearl River Corporation.

Award-winning, Rockland-er, jazz vocalist, voice-over artist, and educator, Shirley Crabbe has been hailed as possessing a voice that “must surely appeal to all who love good jazz singing.” She is the 2009 Rockland County Executive Performing Artist awardee, and winner of the 2008 Stanton Bronze Medalist at the American Traditions Vocal Competition.
