Mario Medici Tours: The Civil Rights Movement
Presented by Dennis P. McHugh Public Library
FREE
REGISTER
HERE

The civil rights movement was a struggle by African Americans in the mid-1950s to late 1960s to achieve civil rights equal to those of whites, including equal opportunity in employment, housing, and education, as well as the right to vote, the right of equal access to public facilities, and the right to be free of racial discrimination. No social or political movement of the twentieth century has had as profound an effect on the legal and political institutions of the United States. This movement sought to restore to African Americans the rights of citizenship guaranteed by the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, which had been eroded by segregationist Jim Crow Laws in the South. Mario Medici will present the events in an interesting and factual manner that will hold your interest for the fastest 60-75 minutes.

“The Long View” Artist’s Reception

Four women artists—Ruth Geneslaw, Paula Madawick, Laura Shapiro, Cassie Hyde Strasser each with a unique perspective, share their long view on life and art. Particularly during this time of Covid-19 and heightened introspection, these women reconsider where they are in their lives and their work, and how they got there. How do life and art intersect? What sacrifices and concessions were made? Age has not diminished their work. On the contrary—with fewer constraints and responsibilities at this time of their lives, they continue to evolve, explore and grow.

“The Long View” can be viewed in ACOR’s Online Gallery through January 31, 2021. All are welcome to join the Artist’s Reception on Wednesday, January 13 at 7PM via zoom. CLICK HERE to join the zoom. (If needed: Meeting ID: 871 6153 8722 Passcode: 010470)

Launch of Instagram Live Artist Interviews!

We feel pretty well-versed in virtual communications by now over here at ACOR!

In shifting to this virtual world, we have found lots of opportunities for meaningful exchanges with the arts community, and in particular, our Member Artists.

On Tuesday, January 12, 2021, ACOR launched its new series of Instagram Live artist interviews! Artist and photographer, Lisa Levart, interviewed fellow artist, Chris Randolph. who is an art therapist and founder of the Rockland Living Museum, housed at the Rockland Psychiatric Center,

About CHRIS RANDOLPH and the ROCKLAND LIVING MUSEUM:
Christine is a Creative arts therapist. She founded the Rockland Living Museum in February 2010 because she wanted to offer her services to the local Rockland community. She has been a painter for more than 40 years, studying with Richard Pousette-Dart at Sarah Lawrence College and the Art Students League. Her special interest is the intersection of creativity and the sacred and divine dimension of life.

The Rockland Living Museum is an open art studio for adults with psychiatric diagnoses located at Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, New York. Our mission is to provide a joyful and soothing refuge where people can feel free and accepted. We encourage all kinds of creative expression such as painting, weaving, clay, mosaics, art from recycled and found materials as well as dance movement therapy. Many exhibits take place locally throughout the year and we visit local nature spots as well as museums in NYC. The Rockland Living Museum honors the sacred and deep meaning of art-making and welcomes the diverse creative expression of all its artists.

Our artists are both inpatient and outpatient and have a wide array of psychiatric issues as well as forensic histories and cognitive/developmental challenges. We also have a group of deaf artists.

The full interview can be seen on Instagram: @artscouncilofrockland.org

#GivingTuesday is one week from today! Donate to the Artist's Support Fund!

ACOR_Artists Support Fund Logo.png

Dear ACOR Supporters and Friends:

During this most bizarre and challenging year, we at ACOR have been uplifted by your ongoing support of the arts. Of the many things your support has enabled us to do, one of the most gratifying and timely was the launch of our new Artist's Support Fund, administered via the Rockland Community Foundation.

“Throughout history artistic expression has played a critical role in defining who we are as a society. Whether its through traditional media (such as painting and such) or more expressive means the arts are a form of communication and fosters our need for creativity and fulfillment. We probably all agree on this, Yet the arts have historically been underfunded. Especially when it pertains to individuals who are striving to create and advance their craft.”
— - Julie Sadowski, executive director, Rockland Community Foundation

SUPPORT THE FUND

Our inaugural class of grantees is incredibly impressive. We provided grants to Bill Batson, Shirley Crabbe, Adam Falcon, Samuel Harps, and Conor MacFinn. All received funds to boost their artistic practice and to advance their every day work. We hope you will learn more about each of these incredible talents here and support them in their endeavors. You can also hear in their own words, the impact that the Fund has had on their work these past few months:

Samuel Harps Video

As we enter the ninth month of the pandemic, we anticipate a higher volume of applications in the next round in December. Your support can help us provide support to Rockland County artists - many of whom are either underemployed or unemployed at this time, and may be for the foreseeable future.

One week from today is Giving Tuesday. If you find yourself in a position to give, please consider supporting the Artist's Support Fund. Grant sizes range from $250-$500, so a little truly goes a long way.

“Taking the Struggle to the Streets: Community Activism,” Photography by Collette V. Fournier

The Arts Council of Rockland is pleased to host photographer Collette V. Fournier’s virtual exhibition titled, “Taking the Struggle to the Streets: Community Activism,” on view October-November 2020. Accompanying the exhibition is an interview with the artist by Bill Batson of the Nyack Sketch Log.

In the artist’s own words: “As an artist/photographer, we often travel through various stages to communicate our feelings and opinions. Images presented in “Taking the Struggle to the Streets: Community Activism” are a compilation of my visual interpretations from over the years. Having been raised in the sixties and seventies, one genre that never swayed from my soul was the documentation of our civil rights which included die-ins, rallies, marches, memorials of historians and fallen leaders. So many leaders put their lives on the line to make our lives better.

Whether shot in black and white or color, analogue or digital, I relied on the documentation of the event to stimulate my vision bringing together elements of composition, light, form, environmental portraiture and the decisive moment.”

The exhibition is currently on view here through the end of November 2020. A Virtual Art Reception will take place on Wednesday, October 14 @ 7PM EST. Details, including zoom link, can be found here.

“Together 1,” by Charlotte Mouquin, Oil on Canvas, 36” x 36”

“Balancing Chaos” by Charlotte Mouquin

Also on view now through November 2020, is “Balancing Chaos,” by Charlotte Mouquin.

Balancing Chaos highlights new work by artist Charlotte Mouquin. This virtual exhibition of abstractions is a collective portrait that reflects our everyday lives. Oil on canvas, and mixed media water based media pieces depict mental maps, memory, unfolding journeys, interaction, and micro/macrocosmic maps of collective challenges, hopes, and perseverance.

Mouquin’s current visual vocabulary has been developed over the past decade plus, going back to the beginning of Art School in 2000. Personal narratives, trauma and strength are addressed through the shapes, lines and colors with an evolving catharsis for the visceral mediums. Works on paper begin with watercolor, ink or gouache, and then get defined through acrylic line work, and black ink.

The new 2020 Silver Lining Drawing series includes silver leaf and allude to the glimmers of hope despite challenging times. The spiraling shapes, forms and pathways provoke hope and healing despite current events or collective trauma.

The exhibition is currently on view here through the end of November 2020. A Virtual Art Reception will take place on Wednesday, October 14 @ 7PM EST.

Public Art on the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge!

The Flux of Being, Mural by Nyack artist, Chris Soria

The Flux of Being, Mural by Nyack artist, Chris Soria

Have you had a chance to experience the public art along the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge?

From our friends at ArtsWestchester who made this all possible:

“ArtsWestchester partnered with the New York State Thruway Authority and the Arts Council of Rockland on a landmark project to bring 10 major works of public art to the shared use path of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge. Eight New York State artists received commissions through a competitive application process that yielded more than 100 applicants. The completed sculptures, bike racks, and mural are spectacular expressions of community, place, and creativity. The artwork is monumental, free, public and available to all New York residents and visitors.

The bridge’s 3.6-mile state-of-the-art, twin-span crossing connecting Rockland and Westchester counties opened June 15 and it is bookended with monumental sculptures by Brooklyn artist Cheryl Wing-Zi Wong and Long Island City artist Ilan Averbuch. This is new permanent public art installation is a magnet for art-lovers if all ages.

“This unique art walk represents a remarkable collaboration between state government and cultural groups that helped select the artists through a grassroots competitive process that has given some of the featured artists their first major commissions.”  – Janet Langsam, CEO, ArtsWestchester

Read about each of the magnificent works here.

View this wonderful video by the New York State Thruway Authority and get a behind-the-scenes look with some of the artists, including Nyack’s own Chris Soria, whose mural “The Flux of Being,” graces the South Broadway underpass along the New York State Thruway.

And, lastly, VIEW THE ARTWORK IN PERSON!

The Arts Council of Rockland thanks ArtsWestchester and the New York State Thruway Authority for bringing this incredible project to life.
